The Justice Department has settled two lawsuits brought by Tea Party and other conservative groups against the IRS for allegedly delaying their applications for tax-exempt status by subjecting them to higher scrutiny.

“I hope this is the last shoe to drop because it has been a huge distraction in the tax-exempt field,” Douglas N. Varley, a member at Caplin & Drysdale, Chartered in Washington, told Bloomberg Tax. “I continue to advise my clients that the government cuts square corners and we should cut square corners too. There has really been an erosion of trust.”
