Caplin & Drysdale's extensive legacy in the tax community began in 1964 when Mortimer M. Caplin, a former IRS Commissioner under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, founded the firm in Washington, D.C.   Mr. Caplin, who recently turned 100, was the first and only IRS Commissioner able to convince a sitting president to visit the IRS. During his time as Commissioner, Mr. Caplin also oversaw the installation of the agency’s first computer systems and launched the “New Direction” of tax administration with three main objectives: (1) better service to taxpayers; (2) vigorous but reasonable enforcement, and (3) curbing of abuses.

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2014, Caplin & Drysdale continues to be a leading provider of tax, tax controversy, and litigation legal services to corporations, individuals, and nonprofits throughout the United States and around the world.  The firm’s reputation over the years has earned the trust and respect of clients, industry peers, and government agencies.  Our lawyers' strong tactical and problem-solving skills―combined with substantial experience handling a variety of complex, high stakes, matters in a boutique environment―make us one the nation's most distinctive law firms.
