Celebrating Its 50th Anniversary, the Firm Continues to Enhance Its Legal Services

Washington, D.C.—January 8, 2014:  Caplin & Drysdale is pleased to announce the promotion of four attorneys.  Effective February 1, 2014, Kirsten Burmester and Todd E. Phillips will become Members of the Firm, and effective January 1, 2014, Andrew J. Sackett and Brendan Wilson will become Of Counsel to the Firm.  "The promotion of Kirsten, Todd, Andrew, and Brendan adds to the breadth and depth of the Firm's expanding global tax and complex litigation legal services," remarked Scott D. Michel, President of Caplin & Drysdale.  "Each are well-regarded by both clients and peers for their insightful counsel, and we look forward to their continued contributions to the success of our clients." 

Ms. Burmester is a Member of the Firm's highly-regarded International Tax, Tax Controversies, Private Client, and Corporate, Business & Transactional Tax practice groups.  She focuses her practice on international tax issues facing U.S. and non-U.S. businesses and individuals, including tax planning and tax controversy work.  Ms. Burmester advises businesses on matters relating to transfer pricing and structuring and reporting cross-border investments involving foreign trust, corporate, and partnership structures.  Additionally, she counsels both U.S. and foreign high-net-worth individuals on cross-border investments and estate planning structures.

A Member in the Firm's nationally-recognized Complex Litigation and Creditors' Rights Groups, Mr. Phillips is an Order of the Coif graduate of UCLA School of Law who joined Caplin & Drysdale in 2008.  He focuses his practice on complex litigation, with particular emphasis in creditors' rights and bankruptcy litigation, commercial litigation, and class actions.  Since joining the firm, Mr. Phillips has represented a diverse group of litigation clients ranging from institutional investors to nonprofit organizations.  In the bankruptcy arena, he protects the rights and interests of creditors, tort claimants, official creditors' committees, and labor organizations.  Additionally, Mr. Phillips has extensive experience in briefing and analyzing complex issues before bankruptcy courts, district courts, and courts of appeals across the country.

Mr. Wilson is Of Counsel to the Firm's well-respected Exempt Organizations Group.   He provides a broad spectrum of tax and corporate advice to various tax-exempt organizations, including charities, churches and religious organizations, trade associations, social welfare groups, and private foundations.  Mr. Wilson's representations include seeking rulings and determinations from tax authorities; structuring and negotiating transactions; completing mergers, asset purchases and spin-offs; providing strategic tax advice regarding activities in the United States and in foreign countries; advising on corporate governance matters; and representing clients in tax controversies with federal, state, and local tax authorities.
