President Barack Obama's White House is taking a new approach to straddling the tricky legal line between governing and campaigning: the tandem press briefing.
Starting last week, Obama for America traveling press secretary Jen Psaki joined White House Press Secretary Jay Carney when he was briefing reporters aboard Air Force One during Obama political trips. So far, there have been three such off-camera gaggles, as the press and White House call them.

Joseph Birkenstock said the Obama White House's tandem briefings are a quite reasonable way to accommodate the concerns about keeping official and political duties separate.
"My view is that makes a lot of sense," said Birkenstock, a lawyer at Caplin and Drysdale and former chief counsel of the Democratic National Committee. "I think it's a really tough issue....There's a preference I think among some practitioners that the world segregate itself neatly into official and political categories....In my experience, that's not how the world works."
