The Mexican diplomat who has served as secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development since 2006 announced that he will leave his post at the end of May upon completing his third five-year term.

Peter Barnes, a tax law professor at Duke University School of Law (and Of Counsel also at Caplin & Drysdale), said the outgoing secretary-general has focused more on tax issues — and supported OECD staff members working on them, particularly Saint-Amans — than some of his predecessors.

"Gurría regularly takes time to talk at tax meetings and show his support for the OECD's work on BEPS and digital taxation," Barnes told Law360.
