Mark Matthews Comments on IRS Criminal Investigation Division Chief in Tax Notes

July 13, 2020, Tax Notes

Retiring IRS Criminal Investigation division Chief Don Fort helped the division deal with a changing tax enforcement environment and agency wide resource issues, leaving CI in a better position than he found it, according to practitioners.

On July 9 the IRS announced that Fort would be retiring September 30. Fort, who has run CI since the summer of 2017, took over for Richard Weber just as the wave of tax-related identity theft was ebbing.

Mark E. Matthews, a former CI chief now with Caplin & Drysdale, told Tax Notes that Fort “has been the right chief for the right time at CI, bringing a renewed focus on cases that improve tax compliance, modernizing CI’s investigative techniques with data analytics in the face of declining resources, and enhancing CI’s ability to investigate global cases through improved international cooperation with foreign law enforcement.”
