Matthew Sanderson Comments on Elliott Broidy in POLITICO

October 9, 2020, POLITICO Influence

What the charges against Broidy mean: Elliott Broidy, a top fundraiser for President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, has become the latest in a string of people with ties to Trump to face charges of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. "The case centers on an accusation that Mr. Broidy accepted $6 million from a foreign client to lobby administration officials to end a federal investigation related to the looting of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund, known as 1MDB," The New York Times' Ken Vogel reports. "The court filing also accuses Mr. Broidy of seeking the extradition of a Chinese citizen from the United States. He did not succeed in either effort, and at one point sought to deceive his client about having raised the 1MDB case directly with President Trump, the court filing said." Broidy is expected to plead guilty.

Broidy's case "should put to rest any notion that the Justice Department’s more aggressive enforcement in this area was a temporary uptick, related solely to Paul Manafort’s prior business activities," Matthew Sanderson, a lawyer who advises clients on foreign lobbying law, wrote in an email to PI, referring to Trump's former campaign chairman who pleaded guilty in 2018 to violating FARA.
