Bloomberg Law Quotes Christopher Rizek and Meghan Biss on Impact of Growing IRS Backlog During Shutdown

Date: 1/23/2019

Tax practitioners are becoming increasingly alarmed at the IRS's growing backlog of work as the partial government shutdown appears to have no end in sight.

. . .

Everything is going to slow down until the IRS can address the work that is being hindered by the ongoing shutdown, Christopher Rizek, a Member at Caplin & Drysdale, Chartered in Washington, and others told Bloomberg Tax Jan. 18 at the American Bar Association Section of Taxation midyear meeting in New Orleans.

“They're just going to have to work through it,” Rizek said. However, “in many subject areas and substantive areas of the Service, they were already understaffed and backlogged. That's going to be worse.”

. . .

[“There was also supposed to be training on how to process the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act stuff for the 1040 for those employees. That hasn’t happened yet. It didn’t happen because of the shutdown so I don’t know how ready they are for it but we’ll see,”] said Meghan Biss, Of Counsel at Caplin & Drysdale, Chartered.
