Leighanne Scott Talks to Law360 on New SALT Practice

Date: 9/3/2019

Caplin & Drysdale Chtd. has hired a former KPMG tax managing director to lead the firm's newly formed state and local tax practice, the firm announced Tuesday.

Leighanne Scott, whose practice has included working on income tax and sales and use tax issues, will help expand Caplin & Drysdale's new state and local tax practice.

“Caplin & Drysdale has identified the building of a SALT practice as a dynamic response to clients' needs and as setting the stage for the firm's continued success,” the firm said.

 . . .

“With tax reform, the Wayfair decision, audit activity — all these things are kind of bringing state and local tax to the forefront of our clients and they felt with that, it was the right time to add a practice,” Scott said.

. . .

“That's certainly been something that clients have wanted consultation on, to really understand their new obligations under the new tax regimes that have been passed since the Wayfair decision was decided last summer,” Scott said.

Caplin's new practice will also focus on multistate and multinational corporations and wealthy families and individuals across taxing jurisdictions, she said.

“I'm interacting with the rules of California, Massachusetts, along with local administrators in Washington, so it can take a lot of different turns on a daily basis, but my vision for the practice is that it truly is a multistate practice,” Scott said.

Setting the practice apart will be Caplin's reputation and its approach to bringing together clients' tax objectives with regulators to find mutual resolutions, Scott said.

“Collaboration is really what I hope will set us apart as a practice,” Scott said.
