Patricia Lewis Talks to Law360 on History of D.C. Women Tax Partners

Many of the women practicing in the largely male-dominated tax world of the 1980s sought support from one another through groups such as the Tax Coalition, founded in 1983 as a networking group for women in government. A separate Friday lunch group for women tax partners also formed.

“There were only a few of us in '80 or '82,” recalled Patricia Lewis of Caplin & Drysdale, one of the early members. “Now we have 70 members.”

In addition to promoting balance at the firms where they work, women have changed the general atmosphere of the workplace, Lewis said.

“Women are more collaborative, more process-oriented, more inclusive, more polite,” she said. “That can affect the culture of a firm.”
