Allison of Caplin & Drysdale Chtd. said it's tempting when interacting with an auditor who's unfamiliar with the applicable rules and statutes to make things difficult for him, but he said he finds issues are resolved much more quickly and smoothly if he takes the time to educate the auditor.

"If you can facilitate the relationship with the auditor, educate them and persuade them this is something you can resolve in a cordial fashion, they don't feel a need to waste a limited amount of resources to pull in the big guns," Allison said.
