Mark Matthews, a former top official at both the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice who is now at the law firm Caplin & Drysdale in Washington, said that U.S. officials have been aggressively pursuing Swiss bank officials who have aided evasion by U.S. taxpayers.

"In this case, they appear to have found a former Swiss bank official hiding his own accounts," he said.
