Prior to joining the firm, he served as an attorney in the Passthroughs & Special Industries Division at the IRS Office of Chief Counsel where he worked on matters involving trusts, partnerships, and S corporations.

Highlights
Prior to joining Caplin & Drysdale, Mr. Koppel served as an attorney in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, Passthroughs & Special Industries Division. At the IRS, he advised on the interaction between gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer taxes imposed during life or at death and the specific income tax rules applicable to trusts and estates. Mr. Koppel also worked on questions regarding self-dealing and excess business holdings rules for private foundations, and he drafted regulations addressing the application of the corporate alternative minimum tax to partnerships. While at Harvard Law School, he represented small businesses and nonprofits through the Transactional Law Clinic, externed for Judge Travis A. Greaves at the United States Tax Court, and served as a Teaching Fellow.
